Bistro 1
Located on the bustling Beak Street in Soho, this restaurant is always filled with a pre-party, post-sightseeing crowd. For hearty Mediterranean meals and a no-nonsense, unpretentious vibe, Bistro1 is a buzzy venue for informal lunches, office parties and lively nights out with groups of friends. The dining room is colourful and the restaurant's service is super-friendly, but Bistro1's menu itself is the main attraction, crammed with old-fashioned favourites such as fish and chips, bangers and mash and chargrilled sardines. We love the pan-fried tuna steak with sautéed cherry tomatoes, garlic sauce and rice; the Mediterranean-style meat Moussaka with rice and salad; and the sticky and delicious homemade banoffee pie.

Cibo
This Kensington local favourite attracts fans from all over the capital who devoutly wish they had a Cibo - there's only one - in their street. The decor is cosy Mediterranean with truly unique artwork on the walls, with smaller rooms providing a sense of intimacy. The staff have that inimitable Italian welcome and capacity for fine service without a lot of fuss. Fish is a speciality of the house, so try pasta filled with crab in a special sauce to start, or the octopus, green bean and potato salad. Then go for the spaghetti with lobster in its own sauce, although the calves liver is delicious, too. Coffee with petits fours are on the don't miss list, too. Servings are huge and the pace is leisurely.

Clarke's Restaurant
Opened in 1983 by passionate chef Sally Clarke, this local legend on Kensington Church Street has become a firm favourite with professional critics and amateur gourmets alike. For 21 years, Sally served a four-course ‘no choice’ set dinner, but now there is a weekly changing menu that showcases her passion for high quality seasonal produce. Herbs and vegetables come from organic suppliers in South East England; buffalo mozzarella is flown in from Naples twice a week; and shellfish is sent overnight by rail from Scotland. Popular dishes include loin of Balmoral roe deer with apple and sage sauce; baked fillet of Cornish brill with herbed crumbs and thyme cream; and dark chocolate and chestnut tart. Clarke’s is quite simply an unforgettable experience.
