The restaurant's service is super-friendly, but Bistro1's menu itself is the main attraction, crammed with old-fashioned favourites such as fish and chips, bangers and mash and chargrilled sardines. Café Mode restaurant in London's Covent Garden is a little Med-inspired gem, as cosy and comforting as your favourite fleece. The décor is a simple mix of dark wood and apricot walls and large mirrors, and the warm atmosphere, reasonable prices and delightfully friendly service have made this handily-placed café a word-of-mouth hit. Start with calamari fritti, served with dill mayonnaise dip, then tuck into a juicy sirloin steak or one of the justifiably famous pizzas. Cantina
For a chic-yet-casual city-style meal in the heart of Holborn, you can't go wrong with a table at Cantina Café. With its Milanese décor and affordable Mediterranean menu, this eatery is popular with upmarket office workers, students and pastaphiles who like to escape from the hustle and bustle, and shoppers taking time out to refuel. Hispaniola
Moored at Victoria Embankment, the Hispaniola has been a landmark on the London scene for more than thirty years, and it's still a great place to gather and dine. The view is, of course, fantastic, particularly for romantic dinners. But the food is also very good indeed, with a Mediterranean menu featuring delicious dishes like Roast whole seabass with a warm basil and tomato vinaigrette or oven-cooked beef fillet with melted Stilton and red wine jelly. We recommend the carpaccio of smoked venison with parmesan and parsley herb salad to start, and absolutely everything on the pudding menu to finish. Wine list is strong on Spanish bottles...por supuesto, and you can also enjoy one or two from the extensive brandy and liquer menu.

Hummus Bros
After the success of their first Hummus Bros branch on Wardour Street, the founders – close friends Christian and Ronen – decided to bring their delicious hummus to the heart of Holborn. Their concept is all about fresh ingredients and value for money so it’s no surprise their food is a hit with local students and office workers. The menu is incredibly simple – just order a portion of hummus and a warm pitta bread and then choose from tasty toppings like guacamole, chunky beef, mushrooms and fava beans. We love the chicken and sun-dried tomato topping, washed down with some of their mint and ginger lemonade. If you’re really hungry, you can order a salad on the side or share some sticky-sweet baklava.

Mediterranean Kitchen on St Martin’s Lane, Covent Garden manages to avoid all the predictable Med clichés. What it does provide is simple but delicous food on wooden candlelit table creating a lovely, cosy ambience. Matching the rustic tables is a largely rustic menu of fresh, simple ingredients such as lamb steak with patatas bravas, or a particular favourite – the house steak burger. There is also a light meal selection which makes it an ideal choice for the pre and post theatre and opera going crowd. A real find.

Filled with opera luvvies, tourists and eccentric Londoners, Sarastro has earned itself an iconic reputation in London's West End for its opulent décor and flamboyant food.
