Bhatti
Covent Garden ain't short of good Indian restaurants, and Bhatti is amongst the best. After all, it's been recommended by Egon Ronay. Housed in an historic 17th century listed building, it is pleasantly bright inside where spotlights highlight the shiny blonde wooded floor and chairs. After a friendly welcome comes the best bit - the menu. There's nothing esoteric or scary on it, just a familiar palate-pleasing list of the dishes you know and love - chicken tikka masala, jalfreizi, vindaloo, madras, lamb rogan ghosh...Pretty much everything is good value; a bottle of house wine costs just under a tenner. Whether a curry lover or curry virgin, Bhatti is a great place to explore Indian cuisine.

Chutney Raj
Chutney Raj restaurant in London is the only Central London restaurant specializing in Bengali/Bangladeshi fish dishes. With roopchanda, bowal, ayre and bas flown in fresh from the East, the chefs create the sort of authentic dishes that bring tears to the eyes of émigrés. It’s a small eaterie that seems unassuming in its bright décor and friendly, casual ambience. But high-fliers from the inns of court and ITN across the street fill the place, as does Archbishop Desmond Tutu whenever he’s in town. Great lunch specials, as well as an extensive menu of old and new favourites.

Hason Raja
It's not everyday a restaurant is named after a 19th century Bangladeshi poet come playboy, but there's more than a famous name to grab your attention at Hason Raja. Rafu, the soft-spoken manager, has concentrated the experiences of his 28 years in the industry into creating a substantial menu of self-styled Indian and Bangladeshi dishes, as genuine as any served this side of the Orient. Whether you like your food hot, mild or Westernised there's plenty to choose from, such as shamdo chicken (medium hot) and ramo chicken (hot), cooked in an iron souk - both recommended by the chef. Children might prefer the very mild malai chicken tikka, created with their younger palates in mind. Painted mainly in mint green with matching and immaculate suede Italian furniture decorated with fresh flowers, there's a modern feel to the place.

Moti Mahal
Moti Mahal restaurant is one of London’s favourite Indian restaurants, a great-looking, modern space of crisply-laid tables, chic leather and wood seating, sparkling chandeliers and a copper-backed open kitchen that lets you watch the chefs expertly working their tandoori ovens. Lunchtimes attract a mature corporate crowd, while evenings see the same business-people unwinding and mixing with smart friends, family and theatregoers. Moti Mahal does traditional Indian food with an exciting contemporary twist, in dishes like starter of deep-fried sea bass with caraom seeds and ginger. Covering several Indian regions, the menus meaty, smoky kebabs from the northwest frontier are particularly excellent.

Rasa Maricham
Whether you’re a fan of the ever-popular Rasa chain or just love authentic Keralan food, you should definitely pay a visit to Rasa Maricham. Tucked away inside a Holiday Inn, you might be surprised to find this little gem just a stones throw from Kings Cross station. The restaurant specialises in dishes made using black pepper, as this spice is indigenous to the rainforests of South India. We recommend starting with a traditional masala dosa (a gram flour pancake filled with spiced potatoes and vegetables) or the parippu – a lentil soup flavoured with garlic, coriander and black pepper. The main event are the flavoursome curries, cooked to authentic recipes, and for dessert there’s kulfi and payasam (sweet rice pudding) to cool things off. For a Keralan feast in Kings Cross, you can’t go wrong here!
