Hawksmoor
It may be located immediately between Seven Dials and Covent Garden, but tucked down a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it side street, Hawksmoor is a well kept secret beloved of locals looking for a restaurant offering more than your average high street diner. With a long history of dining on this very site - as far back as 1807, steak suppers were served here to luminaries including the Duke and Duchess of York and Prince of Wales - Hawksmoor has a lot to live up to, something that the team here take very seriously. Though designed with modern comforts and fashions in mind, Hawksmoor’s interior is nonetheless in keeping with the building’s original features, exposed brickwork and panelling firmly in place around the masculine furnishings, somehow appropriate for a urban hideaway specialising in red meat. A good selection of beers and old school cocktails are accompanied by a carefully compiled wine list while food, though hearty, is sophisticated and forward looking with glimpses of international influence. Join Hawksmoor’s Wine Club for BYOB Mondays (corkage fee £5) and a range of fine oenophile friendly events.

The Bountiful Cow
The Bountiful Cow is one generous beast: a public house devoted to beef. Executive chef Roxy Beaujolais (of Seven Stars and TV fame) serves large steaks and larger burgers at pubby prices, plus cask-conditioned ales and good wines. The young, relaxed ambience features bright décor, cowboy film posters and moo-cow ads. Dine in banquettes, or on Lloyd Loom chairs, at oak tables—either at bar level, or downstairs, with the kitchen entertainingly visible through glass. The menus feature aged steaks and burgers (free toppings if you wish), and other dishes; even some vegetarian ones. Did we mention that portions are large?
