Cinnamon Restaurant and Bar
Looking to treat a business colleague or potential partner to something out of the ordinary? Then head straight to Cinnamon Restaurant and Bar in the heart of Canary Wharf. Chef Neil Thrift, formerly of Scotland’s famous Five Star eatery Gleneagle’s, has created a spectacular menu of modern English cuisine, but with a twist. All dishes are seasoned with their key spice: cinnamon. Sample the bar’s famous signature vodka cocktails, made from your choice of sixteen different varieties of vodka in stock. The Cinnamon Martini is a popular crowd favourite. Even the décor goes beyond the norm. Chinese slate, mahogany, glowing green glass, and a built-in aquarium complete the eclectic feel. Gallery
Yes, really. Gallery is an actual art gallery that boasts work by some of Britain and France’s brightest young lights – Damien Hirst, David Begbie, Gavin Turk, Mark Quinn for instance -- and it’s also a restaurant, bar and club. A bit of the West End in North London, they say and we’d add Hoxton, Shoreditch and some of the groovier studios south of the river. Décor is contemporary modern to give the artworks room to breathe. Early twentieth century works feature in the dining room, which chef Stephen Englefield complements with his own works of art on the plate. The cuisine is English, but with French underpinnings and features dishes like starter of orange and cardamom braised oxtail with house-made gnocchi, main course of the chef’s favourite roast saddle of lamb with cauliflower puree and grain mustard sauce, and dessert of prune and armagnac crème brulee.

Jamies
That atmosphere is a consistent chipper one at Jamies restaurant in Minories, on the east side of the City in the Tower Hill and Tower Bridge area. The corner location, giving it a light, airy and spacious feel, all but guarantees it alone, but the fine selection of wines and freshly prepared, simple, pub dishes (everything from sandwiches and sharing platters to three course meals) can but help. The restaurants menu is a regularly changing one to keep in line with the seasons and to keep regulars on their toes. Jamies approach is honest and simple, but also rewarding and successful – great wine, fresh food and friendly service at all times of day.

Porters English Restaurant
Opened by the 7th Earl of Bradford in 1979, Covent Garden’s Porters English Restaurant is a London dining icon. Set in the very centre of Theatreland, with a spacious, comfortable and traditionally decorated interior and friendly, professional service, Porters boasts a reputation for some of the best British food around, serving up the likes of sausage and mashed potato and the pies which first made the kitchen famous. It’s typical comfort food all the way at Porters, appealing to tourists seeking out the real thing and locals after an unpretentious dinner even better than mummy ever made. Afternoon teas are a real event at Porters Restaurant too – well, is there a more British meal?

Seymours
Pass beneath the awning of The Leonard Hotel’s Georgian front door, turn left and you’ll find yourself in Seymours - a thick-carpeted room full of paintings, upholstered armchairs, sofas and an open fireplace. The feel is decidedly English country house, and Seymours menu matches perfectly with a smattering of English favourites on offer, rounded out the small, but perfectly formed menu with a few old school European classics for good measure. Start with succulent king prawns pan fried with garlic and white wine sauce, or a refreshingly light pumpkin ginger soup. For mains, we love the comforting retro offerings of Steak Diane, fish chips and bangers mash.

St Christopher's Inn
Located on London's bustling Borough High Street, St Christopher's Inn is a historic institution popular with an eclectic crowd of local students, foodies, office workers and backpackers. The narrow dining room – with its cream and chocolate brown colour scheme, vintage bar and wooden tables – has a relaxed old English vibe. The menu is full of first class British produce like Lincolnshire sausages and cured meats and cheeses from nearby Borough Market. Popular dishes include the charcuterie selection, the pulled pork chilli, as well as heartier options like pie and mash and their signature salt beef. St Christopher's Inn is popular for business lunches and the bar is always buzzing – perfect for pre/post dinner drinks.

The Belle Vue
The simple charms of The Belle Vue have made it a bit of a Clapham institution in recent years. Not only somewhere for commuters to pop in for a pint on their way through (The Belle Vue is conveniently close to Clapham Common tube), it’s also a spot where locals enjoy the calm atmosphere of a restaurant along with the home style comforts of a favourite pub. As the lights are dimmed diners find themselves ensconced in a cosy setting where faded gilt mirrors, button backed banquettes and chunky scrubbed wooden tables provide a modern take on old Victorian pub décor. The pared down styling continues on a traditional menu which changes to suit the seasons but will more often than not offer favourites such as fish and chips, honey roast ham with fried egg and delicious chargrilled steaks.

The Goring Dining Room
The last hotel to be opened during the reign of Edward VII, The Goring – just minutes from Buckingham Palace – is the perfect setting for a meal fit for a King. Lavishly regal from decorative ceiling and Swarovski crystal chandeliers (lowered in the evening to create a more intimate atmosphere) to gleamingly spotless Arthur Price cutlery, the Dining Room brings Edwardian style in to the twenty first century. Expectations are more than adequately filled by a menu which could have been inspired by a Royal hunting trip out in Britain’s most beautiful fields. Grouse, duck, Scottish Salmon and even that old favourite, steak and kidney pie, feature while often forgotten delicacies-past, jellied eel or roast marrow bone, make a surprisingly welcome comeback too.
