Benares
Top chef Atul Kochhar’s first solo foray in to the world of the restaurant, Benares in London’s Mayfair in Berkeley Square, has been proclaimed a roaring success by the press and public alike. An Indian restaurant unlike any other, Benares boasts a stunning minimalist design full of high-end design touches from the gleaming black stone floor to the indoor pond, complete with water lilies. And you can expect extremely professional service from highly trained staff. As impressive as the exquisite surroundings are, Benares’s menu is the heart of the enterprise. Combining Northern and Southern Indian cuisine, the menu of Kochhar and his team is a complex list of intriguing, stylish dishes taking traditional Indian recipes as their starting point. The wine carte is a superb effort to match the subtle spicing of the cuisine, with vintages that enhance the flavours and it succeeds beautifully. Undoubtedly a landmark restaurant on the London dining scene, Benares is an utterly unique proposition.

Café Naz
Brick Lane is bustling with curry houses, bakeries and hip bars, and Café Naz – with its Indian-brasserie style interior, is one of the oldest and most famous restaurant in the lane. The dining room at Café Naz is decorated with a glass staircase, loud splashes of yellow, purple and lime green, and plenty of potted palms. The jovial atmosphere is perfect for family nights out, late-night curries and fun parties – and the servings here are huge. We recommend the hyderabadi achar gost – chunks of lamb slow-cooked on the bone and served in a rich curry sauce with limes and spices – washed down with a bottle Kingfisher or Cobra beer.

Haandi
Haandi is named after the narrow-necked cooking pots that lock in the memorable flavours of this Northern Indian cuisine. Some dishes are served in mini haandis, but the main thing is not how the food comes but how good it is. Decorated in elegant neutral golds and creams you can enter from Brompton Rd where the private dining area is or at the rear, Cheval place where you’ll find the bar - The glass fronted kitchen adds drama, allowing you to watch the chefs create their own brand of magic. Popular dishes include the heera panna, sauteed calamari and monkfish, giant prawns grilled in the Tandoor. Haandi produces truly authentic Indian food aimed at a clientele that knows its raitas from its rotis.

Khan's of Kensington
Khan's of Kensington restaurant in London’s South Kensington just a few steps from the tube station has developed a core of devotees over the years, from household names to lesser mortals, who delight in its slightly modern take on North Indian cuisine. The colonial ambience is very relaxed, pleasant, and its bijou dining room has an intimate feel. This is a great choice for pre-Albert Hall or taking the family after a visit to one of the big museums over the road. Some Khan’s of Kensington favourites - among many - are the fish coliwada, which is fried and marinated pomfret fish from Bombay, and the officer's chop of lamb in honey sauce. The tandoori’s and baltis are very popular, and if by chance you don't find your favourite on the menu, the kitchen is are happy to set that right, too. La Sophia
One of the most talked about new restaurants in London’s Notting Hill, La Sophia is fast becoming the place to see and be seen. With its luxurious décor reminiscent of the North Africa of T.E Lawrence, Casablanca and Brideshead Revisited, La Sophia combines French sophistication with a touch of exoticism - parquet floors meet mother of pearl inlaid low tables, immaculate place settings are juxtaposed against rough hewn walls and light filters through gauzy curtains. With experience stretching from Canada to Tel Aviv via Germany, France and Holland, La Sophia’s Chef-Owner has imbued his menu with a wide ranging international influence slotting in perfectly to the mainly traditional-with-a-twist French dishes.

Shezan
Shezan the Indian restaurant, who opened its Knightsbridge doors 40 years ago. Shezan remains the only Indian restaurant in the UK to receive a star rating from Egon Ronay, The Gold Plate Award, and win Restaurant of the Year. Impressive, wouldn't you say? The chef certainly knows his stuff as he trained with the best chef from the region. It's physically arresting too. Diners descend into an ornate cocktail bar filled with an atmospheric array of native objects and trinkets. If you like live music with your meal, go on a Friday or Saturday. But whatever the day or night, you can bet your bottom rupee you'll find yourself in an unhurried atmosphere. Please note that the food at Shezan is freshly prepared to order. Ocassionally this can mean waiting times are longer.
