Adam's Café
Run by Abdel and Frances Boukraa – he hailing from Djerba, Tunisia, she English born and bred – Adam’s Café is a thriving family affair which has grown over the years to become one of Shepherds Bush’s most popular restaurants. A café by day and a restaurant serving North African cuisine by night, Adam’s Café is a bustling local hub, informal and authentic, decorated in mosaics and cheerful colours. It may serve the biggest and best breakfast on Askew Road but this is no greasy spoon. Visit in the evening and find yourself greeted by the spice infused aromas of Tunisia and Morocco. The menu consists simply of couscous dishes alongside grills and tagines, each based precisely on Abdel’s experience of home cooking. You really won’t find a more authentic taste of North Africa in the capital.

Ayoush
Fantastically fun and buzzy high-quality North African restaurant / bar with casbah-style decor and differently themed North African 'caves' downstairs. The food is French-African with the emphasis on North African and the odd Berber and Jewish Moroccan influence thrown in for good measure. Not somewhere to take your Great Aunt Gertie (unless she's a real party animal), but a fab spot for a night out with your pals or a romantic dinner with your main squeeze. What's cooking? Tabouleh, falafel, hummus, sambousek, merguez, stuffed calamari, shawarma, kebabs, tagines, couscous, sea bass and salmon.

Bbar
Bbar's South African-themed bar and restaurant in London's Victoria does a good trade in classy lunches, fine wines and fantastic cocktails. Here’s where you can dine out on springbok (on sweet potato mash, with bacon, lentils and mushroom sauce), or, if it’s lunchtime, Boerewors sausages. Having said that, the menu is predominantly Modern European. The SA options are simply particularly worth mentioning. Mike Myers’ photographs of big game, zebrano wooden table tops, leopardskin lampshades, and fake crocodile leather chairs coupled with enthusiastic, ever-smiling staff provide all the equatorial atmosphere you could wish for. Downstairs, a funky, laidback bar copes with the after-work overspill. Finally, a decent restaurant near Victoria Station.

Cape Town Fish Market
Cape Town Fish Market restaurant is quite a bit more than what it says on the tin. This South African stalwart, now conveniently located in London’s Soho, is a fish market, seafood restaurant, teppanyaki and conveyor belt style sushi bar all under one roof. And if it swims or scuttles in the ocean, you’ll probably find the freshest example of it at Cape Town Fish Market. The firm house favourite, unique in a London restaurant, is the ‘select ‘n’ weigh at the fish display’, where you can create your own seafood platter from the market’s best. Sushi scoots by on a Kaiten-style conveyor-belt – perfect for those looking for a lighter bite. A selection of steak, lamb and poultry is also on offer for those who fancy something warm-blooded. The décor is truly smart yet relaxed, a combination of ocean-inspired blue wash lighting and sleek design. The message at Cape Town Fish Market is come, relax and enjoy.

Maghreb Moroccan Restaurant

A bit like setting foot in a souk with lots of Moroccan pottery and artefacts. Hoards of loyal Islington customers make this a popular North London hangout. What's cooking? Moroccan fare, of course. Mixed meze, spicy lentil and pumpkin tagine, vegetables couscous, aromatic duck served on a bed of couscous and beetroot salad, baghrir - a kind of pancake served with honey and butter and Moroccan coffee or mint tea.
