North Nineteen
Set in the increasingly gentrified Holloway area of North London, North Nineteen is a sign of the times. Where once you might have expected to find spit and sawdust now lies the model contemporary pub-restaurant. Not one detail has been missed here. Stripped wooden floors, reclaimed glamour meets austere Scandinavian design and the all important comfy armchairs. Similarly the mainly British food menu has been thoroughly updated so that those old deep fried classics are now fresh, delicious and always home cooked. European influences add a welcome twist while North Nineteen’s Sunday Roast has become local legend.

Rose and Crown
Situated in north London in the heart of leafy Highgate, The Rose and Crown has been transformed from a perfectly acceptable gastropub into a comfortably elegant destination restaurant. Inside the Rose and Crown restaurant the décor is new-style classic, with pale walls, wooden floors, smart artwork, columns, with pools of light and soft leather chairs that all come together to create an ideal setting for dining well. Head Chef Gareth Thomas has worked with top chefs like Jean-Christophe Novelli and Gary Rhodes, so it’s no surprise to find classic French influences on his modern British cuisine. Popular dishes include the confit of Gloucester Old Spot pork belly with a Calvados jus, the beef shin burger with triple-cooked chips, and honey-glazed duck breast. In summer, the Rose and Crown’s charming patio is open for lunch and dinner. And Michelin recommends the Rose and Crown, as do we.

Rotunda Bar and Restaurant
Anglophilic epicureans eat your heart out – the Rotunda Bar is an amazing gourmet restaurant in the heart of King's Cross that will seduce your British tastebuds with everything from stellar Sunday roasts to hog roasts and a to-die-for English strawberry Eton mess. This neighbourhood gem overlooks the Battlebridge Basin and has a large canalside al fresco terrace for summertime dining, and the menu is like an organic orgy direct from the restaurant's own Northumberland Farm. We highly recommend the Northumbrian beef and ale casserole with horseradish dumplings and the poached Cornish haddock with spinach, a poached free-range egg and mustard cream. The Rotunda is a stylish choice for schmoozing, cocktail dates, Sunday brunch and hearty dinner parties.

The Albion
A Georgian gem in London’s vibrant Islington, The Albion is a country style pub restaurant with a little urban gloss. Originally situated in an area of farmland where Londoners would escape from the smoggy city, The Albion is now a part of the sprawl but remains a retreat from the stress of London life, a relaxed space where time stands still before roaring log fires or in pretty walled gardens. Noted for its Sunday lunches, The Albion’s kitchen has been hailed as one of the best by The Guardian, The Observer and The Independent. It’s not hard to see why. Combining British tradition and seasonality, the hearty yet delicate dishes really are the beating heart of this wonderful pub.

The Bald Faced Stag
Situated on the East Finchley High Road, The Bald Faced Stag has long been a local legend. A major refurbishment in 2007 brought this wonderful old pub in to the 21st century, giving it a new lease of life and bringing with it a new crowd of trendy young locals who have made this gastropub a real success. The imposing Victorian building now houses a welcoming, nouveau-antique look, complete with shabby chic furnishings and touches of boudoir-ish decadence. A huge beer garden underneath the shade of an old sycamore is the piece-de-resistance whilst an open kitchen brings a touch of gastronomic excitement to the dining room. On menu you’ll find a range of fabulous dishes combining the best of British with a little European spice and sunshine.

The Brill
The Brill is a posh British restaurant on the Caledonian Road near King's Cross, named after the time of day that Roman soldiers would meet to feast and drink after a hard day of plundering. Even if plundering isn't your thing, a meal at The Brill is the perfect way to end your day and the chic vanilla-and-chocolate coloured interior, basement bar, well-coiffed crowd and convenient location are enough to make this qualify as a cosy local gem. The menu is produced using the finest locally sourced produce, and classic Brit dishes on offer include the crispy duck, bacon and black pudding salad; the sausages with buttered mash and onion gravy; and the spotted dick for pudding.
