The Brasserie at The Tower
Top marks for the view. The Tower Hotel is on the north bank of the Thames overlooking pristine St Katharine's Docks and next door to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Located on the ground floor of The Tower are the hotel's two restaurants: a carvery and The Brasserie. The Brasserie is more of a casual dining experience serving a Modern British menu in a light, airy space with a panoramic view of Tower Bridge. The animated, largely City crowd show a particular liking for the crab and salad starter followed by a nice ribeye steak and veg. High-level but informal plated service. In summer, the terrace makes a good spot to while away a leisurely afternoon away from it all.

The Empress of India
Fresh from the successful drawing board of brothers Tom and Ed Martin – creators of superb gastropubs The White Swan, The Well and The Gun - comes the beautiful Empress of India restaurant in London’s Victoria Park. It may be styled a gastropub too, but it feels more like a smart casual restaurant with an exquisite, light dining room decorated with lovely murals and intriguing design details, like mussel shell chandeliers and a bar mirror that once graced the Rex Cinema in Calcutta. The Empress of India serves a fit-for-a-king modern British menu of seasonal, locally-sourced classics, many of them meaty affairs cooked within full view and smelling distance on a chrome rotisserie, next to the open kitchen - the Sunday roasts are set to become legendary. The wine list is affordable and intriguing, and the ‘pub’ element shows itself at The Empress in the list of well-kept draught beers and real ales.

The Gun
With awards aplenty to its name – including Time Out’s Best Gastropub title – Coldharbour’s The Gun is considered to be among the best pub-restaurants not only on the Docklands but in London. Set in a typical Victorian pub, The Gun has been painstakingly renovated to provide classy, authentic surroundings with a high end finish throughout. It has a classic ‘pub’ look but with a brighter, airier feel than one might expect, complemented by high ceilings, an imposing dark wood bar and, rather wonderfully, a sunny terrace overlooking the water. High quality British food with a particular emphasis on fish, fresh from Billingsgate daily, is The Gun’s speciality while not only does the bar offer a wide range of beers but the wine list is seriously classy too.

The Hemingway
Easily located on the northern edge of East London’s Victoria Park is The Hemingway, a stylish pub with a laid back atmosphere. A typical Victorian city pub from the outside, the interior of The Hemingway is part aristocratic Scottish castle, part Boer hunting lodge, furnished in oxblood Chesterfields and decorated with mounted antlers and taxidermy aplenty – it’s a modern take on the old fashioned, no doubt appealing to the trendiest of East Londoners. Deceptively simple, The Hemingway’s menu offers well-cooked classics with subtle touches of fun and creativity, all fairly priced, while the drinks selection is varied, including a number of very good wines and specialty spirits including, of course, plenty of great rums.
