A Scarlet Dot
Scarlet Dot is the first Indian hâute cuisine restaurant to open in characterful Spitafields. Part of a modern complex of restaurants and posh shops behind the famous indoor market, it does much to challenge your idea of what an Indian restaurant looks like. For starters, it’s as much as drinking den as a restaurant. Very masculine with its tropical woods, dark blinds and black marble floors and walls, the bar provides a seriously cool place to meet for lunch or after-work drinks. The adjoining restaurant is staffed by a talented team supporting five-star Indian chefs adept at whipping up contemporary dishes – the Indian breakfast is not to be missed. In summer, you can eat outside under an impressive glass and steel canopy. Scarlet’s crowd is pretty diverse; lawyers and bankers during the day; locals, designers and artists at night. The name, incidentally, is a reference to the bindi.

Sathiyams Restaurant
Located on the High Street North in Manor Park near East Ham tube station, Sathiyams is a bustling family-owned restaurant serving up a mix of Indian, Chinese and Sri-Lankan cuisine. The interior is atmospheric in only the way that local neighbourhood places can be – an eclectic blend of wooden carvings, glossy tiles and warm colours add to the buzzy vibe and the staff here are genuinely helpful. The menu jumps around from classic curries to fusion-style dishes such as the chicken tikka noodles, but we love the Sathiyams special Singapore noodles – rice noodles with a combination of chicken, lamb and seafood; the paneer tikka masala; and the traditional dosai rice and lentil pancakes served with sambar and chutney.

The Kapok Tree Restaurant
Planning a night out on Brick Lane but don’t fancy curry? At the Kapok Tree restaurant, you and your friends can feast on authentic pan-Asian fare in one of the East End’s most stylish dining rooms. During the day, it’s ideal for low-key lunches and business meetings; while in the evening, the restaurant buzzes with a well-dressed after-work crowd. The bar is fully stocked with fine wine, beer and spirits but we recommend starting with one of their classic cocktails. The Kapok Tree’s menu is full of familiar favourites like spicy tom yum soup; zingy papaya salad; drunken salmon; and sizzling yakitori platters. The flavours are fresh and fragrant - perfect for light mid-week suppers and weekend gatherings with friends and colleagues.
