The Alma On Newington Green, a fashionable North London enclave, The Alma sums up perfectly the local vibe. A pub-restaurant with a laid back, unpretentious feel, this is a homely, relaxed spot with a splash of style and plenty of comfort. The Alma is decorated in deep red and aubergine, mismatched furnishings, Maori art – a reflection of a subtle New Zealand theme – cosy fireplaces and flickering candles while outside a lovely planted garden area provides that London rarity of al fresco dining and drinking. Covering a fair few bases with its imaginative offerings, The Alma not only offers excellent seasonal restaurant quality food with home cooked British style, prepared in house using local ingredients but an array of other gastronomic surprises including a fantastic Sunday roast and a monthly Wine Club. For the many local New Zealand ex-pats, The Alma’s New Zealand Tuck Shop offers a taste from home, while the restaurants Picnics For The Park are an ingenious solution for casual dining out of doors. The Compass Recently rebranded as simply The Compass, the former 'Salmon and Compass' on Penton Street in Islington has reinvented itself as the quintessential London gastro pub – complete with a cosmopolitan open-plan kitchen, a 35 foot bar, moody décor, and a lovely frontage onto the Chapel Street Markets. Cosy and buzzy, this dining room does everything from creamy Scotch duck eggs and posh fish 'n' chips with mushy peas to English snails sautéed with garlic and parsley, and the pub is filled with character with its eclectic mix of furniture and deep blue walls. Perfect for Sunday lunches, after-work drinks and mid-week local meals, The Compass has a superb drinks menu – don't miss the Cheddar Valley Cider. The Flask Something of a Highgate institution, The Flask is a friendly local gastropub with a city-wide reputation. Beautifully appointed to reflect its long history, The Flask has retained plenty of original features and its comfortable pub atmosphere through clever design touches such as reclaimed mismatched chairs and carved benches dotted throughout the maze of cosy rooms. Rumour has it Dick Turpin once hid in the cellar. During the summer months The Flask comes in to its own with its large patio garden full of drinkers and diners soaking up the elusive British sunshine. Typically British food combines with international and seasonal influences on The Flask’s wonderfully tempting menu which adds a surprisingly luxurious twist to your favourite gastropub specials.
