Inside, it’s reminiscent of the cosy trattorias you discover on Italian holidays – complete with exposed brickwork, candlelit tables and walls lined with wine bottles. Fifteen London
Fifteen London restaurant, just off the City Road, is owned by the Jamie Oliver Foundation and was made famous by the 2002 tv documentary series featuring Jamie Oliver and his original team of fifteen young chefs from troubled backgrounds. Right from the start, Fifteen London has been an excellent restaurant, but it has now come of age beautifully and is a legend in its own right. Set in a handsome old building near Old Street, Fifteen London Restaurant enjoys a downstairs dining room that’s a bright, urban space with retro styling and an open kitchen. The menu features top quality seasonal produce in modern Mediterranean dishes with an Italian slant. The daily-changing menus include dishes like freshly-picked Devonshire crab on toasted sourdough with lentils di Castelluccio and brown crab meat dressing; Fifteen’s Sicilian fisherman’s stew; and buttermilk and vanilla panna cotta with spiced roasted plums and cinnamon shortbread. Fifteen London has a laid-back vibe and excellent wine list, integral elements in one of London’s premiere dining experiences.

Griglia
An eccentric restaurant on the mainly residential Theberton Street, just off of bustling Upper Street, Griglia has bags of character, setting it apart from other, blander local Italian restaurants. With striking and varied modern art hanging on the dining room walls and odd plates, lanterns and other curiosities hanging from the ceiling, Griglia has the quirky air of a room belonging to a peculiar art collecting uncle, indeed the staff greet diners as if they were family, recommending wines from a vast list as they show them to their seats. Perhaps the idiosyncratic surroundings are the inspiration behind a vaguely experimental menu, perhaps not. Either way, Griglia have taken authentic Italian cuisine to a gourmet level with cheeky adaptations and additions which have landed this unusual little restaurant in the Michelin Red Guide.

Regatta
Situated in leafy Winchmore Hill, Regatta is an elegant neighbourhood eatery that has become to the go-to place for birthdays, bats mitzvahs and every-day dinners. Owner Beata Ferrarese brings joy and warmth to the convivial dining room which features Venetian masks, gold and pale blue accents, and tables dressed in crisp white linens. The menu, which is offered at a modest fixed price, combines modern and traditional Italian recipes. We love the pasta tre salse – taglioni with three delicious sauces – and the classic fritto misto – a Venetian dish of fried fish and shellfish. On Sundays, Regatta offers a first-class roast dinner that is very popular with the locals, so why not bring your little gourmets along to try out the kids menu?

The warm and inviting interior is matched by the friendliness of the staff who know the menu by heart and are happy to recommend their favourites. The menu showcases the best of Southern Italian cuisine so there’s plenty of traditional pasta dishes and antipasti on offer. We love the Mediterranean bruschettina and the spaghetti vongole with clams and pesto. The highlight of the menu is their wood-fired pizza sold by the metre – perfect for sharing. Different topping combinations sit side by side on the same tasty base, so you can have the spicy Diavola while the kids tuck into the classic margherita.

Tenore
Situated on London’s Barnsbury Road in Islington, Tenore restaurant is a charming neighbourhood eatery specialising in authentic Italian and Sardinian cuisine. Diners are greeted like old friends and welcomed into the dining room where comfy banquette seating and monochrome photographs create a stylish and relaxed setting for any occasion. Tenore’s Italian menu features traditional antipasti, risottos, pasta dishes and familiar favourites like grilled fillet of veal and roast chicken with rosemary and herbs. We recommend trying one of their Sardinian specials like culurgiones - minted potato dumplings in tomato and basil sauce with pecorino cheese. The wood-fired oven produces gorgeous stone-baked pizzas that the chef then tops with high-quality ingredients. Most of the staff are authentic Sardinians, too, so you’ll get plenty of advice on the menu.
