The Clarendon
Tucked away on a tranquil, tree-lined street, The Clarendon is a warm and welcoming pub in the heart of Pimlico. It’s something of a hidden gem, despite the fact it has been operating as a public house for over 150 years. During the day, the hearty British menu is a big hit with the local lunch crowd; while in the evening the atmosphere is more relaxed, with residents and a smart after-work crowd drifting in for dinner and a pint. We recommend The Clarendon’s sizeable sandwiches and classics like scampi and chips, chilli con carne, and bangers and mash. If you’re really hungry, go for their signature burger with tasty extras like chargrilled chorizo and homemade relish. You won’t be disappointed.

The Clifton
The best kept secret in St Johns Wood is The Clifton - a historic little gastropub tucked away in a leafy street just behind Abbey Road. Everything from its rustic front bar to the conservatory restaurant and heated garden make this original hunting lodge a hot spot for discreet working lunches and Sunday afternoon dates. The scene of King Edward VII’s romantic meetings with Lily Langtree, The Clifton has a saucy royal past and the English bistro-style menu features star dishes such as the Abbey Ale beer-battered haddock with home-made chips and mushed peas; the Thai beef salad with spicy peanuts, red onion, cucumber and a minty yoghurt dressing; and the triple chocolate Malteser brownies topped with Chantilly cream.

The Compass
Recently rebranded as simply The Compass, the former 'Salmon and Compass' on Penton Street in Islington has reinvented itself as the quintessential London gastro pub – complete with a cosmopolitan open-plan kitchen, a 35 foot bar, moody décor, and a lovely frontage onto the Chapel Street Markets. Cosy and buzzy, this dining room does everything from creamy Scotch duck eggs and posh fish 'n' chips with mushy peas to English snails sautéed with garlic and parsley, and the pub is filled with character with its eclectic mix of furniture and deep blue walls. Perfect for Sunday lunches, after-work drinks and mid-week local meals, The Compass has a superb drinks menu – don't miss the Cheddar Valley Cider.

The Distillers
Situated near London’s Hammersmith tube on Fulham Palace Road, The Distillers restaurant is a stylish gastropub with the emphasis on nightly in-house entertainment. Upstairs in The Regal Room, there is a comedy night every Monday, and live acoustic music most other nights. The décor of The Distillers juxtaposes grand modern mirrors and white and pink chandeliers with traditional wooden tables and floors. The ambience is warm and cosy, and the service is extremely friendly. The restaurant’s British menu changes monthly, and daily specials are chalked on the blackboard. We love the beer-battered haddock and hand-cut chips with jalapeño tartare sauce and minted mushy peas, and the seared sea bream fillet served with mixed peppers, baby spinach and salsa verde. The Distillers is rightly proud to offer intriguing wines at attractive prices as well as four great real ales sourced from acclaimed small breweries.

The Distillers
Situated in the heart of Farringdon, The Distillers Smithfield is the newly opened sister pub of The Distillers Hammersmith and The Bedford, in Balham. Serving quality gastropub cuisine, The Distillers Smithfield aims to impress, with décor comprising stained glass double doors, crushed velvet banquettes, plush curtains and grand mirrors. The ambience is upbeat yet informal, making The Distillers Smithfield the perfect place to relax and unwind after a hard day’s work. Following in the footsteps of its sister pubs, there is live music on Thursday evenings, and on the last Sunday of the month. We love the chicken bacon sandwich with rocket beef tomato, and the roasted pork belly served with Asian noodle salad cider jus.

The Ealing Park Tavern
A relaxed gastropub in South Ealing, The Ealing Park Tavern has taken the local neighbourhood inn and turned it in to the place to be. A fabulously vintage style interior brings reclamation chic to this corner of West London, with a stripped back, undone vibe bringing surprising warmth to a once old fashioned pub. Many original features remain, to be joined by chalked up specials boards, refectory style dining room seating and chrome beer taps, a sign of the times with a nod to the past. The Ealing Park Tavern’s team are passionate about provenance; sharing their love of good, seasonal produce through a constantly changing menu of meat, fish and vegetarian specialties imbued with natural flavour and made using the best of British wherever possible. Equally important is the Ealing Park Tavern’s wine list, which is again governed by the enthusiastic desire of the team to share the very best with their guests. In the tapas bar small dishes are shared over drinks in a rather more relaxed way while al fresco dining is also available during summer months in a glorious garden setting.

The Flask
Something of a Highgate institution, The Flask is a friendly local gastropub with a city-wide reputation. Beautifully appointed to reflect its long history, The Flask has retained plenty of original features and its comfortable pub atmosphere through clever design touches such as reclaimed mismatched chairs and carved benches dotted throughout the maze of cosy rooms. Rumour has it Dick Turpin once hid in the cellar. During the summer months The Flask comes in to its own with its large patio garden full of drinkers and diners soaking up the elusive British sunshine. Typically British food combines with international and seasonal influences on The Flask’s wonderfully tempting menu which adds a surprisingly luxurious twist to your favourite gastropub specials.

The Grand Union
London’s perfect waterside pub restaurant, The Grand Union, stands on the canal of the same name as it meanders through Maida Vale. While outdoors diners and drinkers relax under oversized brollies strung with bunting, watching canal boats float lazily by, indoors is equally bright thanks to large windows and clever use of colour which lifts this traditional pub in to the buzzy, modern prospect which so appeals to young locals. At The Grand Union, the relaxed atmosphere and accommodating service is accompanied by a wide selection of drinks and an excellent daily changing menu. Food, means home-cooked, simple and unfussy – typical pub food with a modern style, cooked using fresh, seasonal ingredients of uncompromisingly high quality.
