Italian restaurant chain Zizzi opened the doors of its very first branch in London's Chiswick in 1999. Now there are over 100 branches, all decorated in an appealing contemporary style. Wood-fired ovens, open kitchens and modern interior design with locally influenced art features make for a vibrant atmosphere. As for the food, they serve up a variety of traditional Italian dishes including all the usual suspects: salads, antipasti, pasta, pizza, calzone, risotto as well as fish and meat mains and desserts. What Zizzi really pride themselves on is sourcing good quality ingredients; salads are dressed with white balsamic vinegar from Modena, for example, and offer Goddess Olives, a variety known for their firm flesh and nutty flavour. The modestly priced wine list is dominated by Italian wines, starting at £13.45 for a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Shad Thames branch of Zizzi benefits from an excellent location close to London's Tower Bridge and the Design Museum; it's perfect for a post riverside walk lunch.

Zucca restaurant on London’s Bermondsey Street is a crafty little dining room with an understated interior and a big, gourmet Italian menu. Modest and unpretentious, the dining room at Zucca is light and airy with lots of natural wood, concrete, simple white furniture, 30s-style canvases and an open stainless steel kitchen. We love the right-at-home vibe and the friendly service here, and the exquisite cuisine is the icing on the cake.
