Red Sea With its relaxed, bistro feel, Camberwell’s Red Sea mixes grown up sophistication with family friendly dining. Simply decorated in neutral tones with a glass frontage giving perfect people watching views on to the street Red Sea is generally packed with everyone from stylish young couples to groups of friends enjoying the Eritrean and Italian cuisine. While the Italian menu is comprehensive and delicious it’s the traditional Eritrean courses which have got visitors talking. Eaten by hand with injera bread dishes such as alicha beghie and timtimo are a homestyle treat for jaded palettes bored of run of the mill restaurant fare. Plush surroundings, soft music, and unobtrusive service make this an excellent choice for business lunches, as many clever suits have already discovered. In the evening the atmosphere is relaxed yet bustling. Zizzi Italian restaurant chain Zizzi opened the doors of its very first branch in London's Chiswick in 1999. Now there are over 100 branches, all decorated in an appealing contemporary style. Wood-fired ovens, open kitchens and modern interior design with locally influenced art features make for a vibrant atmosphere. As for the food, they serve up a variety of traditional Italian dishes including all the usual suspects: salads, antipasti, pasta, pizza, calzone, risotto as well as fish and meat mains and desserts. What Zizzi really pride themselves on is sourcing good quality ingredients; salads are dressed with white balsamic vinegar from Modena, for example, and offer Goddess Olives, a variety known for their firm flesh and nutty flavour. The modestly priced wine list is dominated by Italian wines, starting at £13.45 for a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Shad Thames branch of Zizzi benefits from an excellent location close to London's Tower Bridge and the Design Museum; it's perfect for a post riverside walk lunch. Zucca Zucca restaurant on London’s Bermondsey Street is a crafty little dining room with an understated interior and a big, gourmet Italian menu. Modest and unpretentious, the dining room at Zucca is light and airy with lots of natural wood, concrete, simple white furniture, 30s-style canvases and an open stainless steel kitchen. We love the right-at-home vibe and the friendly service here, and the exquisite cuisine is the icing on the cake. Perfect for business meetings and intimate evening meals, the menu offers gems such as the carpaccio of sea bass, the leg of lamb with borlotti beans and spinach and the braised pork shoulder with sage, garlic and polenta. Foodies and creative types will want to make this their lunchtime regular. The mid-range prices for high-quality Italian cuisine and the additional joy of the all-Italian wine list make Zucca restaurant one to return to again and again.
