Island Restaurant & Bar
Transforming Lancaster Gate into a culinary landmark is no mean feat, but one that Island has accomplished with quiet aplomb since opening mid-2004. Obviously with a lot of success as it received rave reviews in both Tatler and Harpers Queen 2005 Restaurant Guides. Minimalist, the décor is a cool mix of grey, white and dark brown, but Hyde Park viewed through vast glass walls offers ample colour. The exciting British menu focuses on seasonal greats to create such triumphs as a lasagne of Cornish crab, south coast scallops, seasoned with tomato and ginger, and a scrumptious steamed chestnut pudding with a vanilla custard and chestnut ice cream. Even the cocktails proudly include British ingredients, and the wine list features bins from English vineyards. Never before has doing your bit for your country been so tasty.

Kensington Place
To many in-the-know food lovers, Kensington Place restaurant, at the top of Kensington Church Street in fabulous, happening Notting Hill, is the place where the British food renaissance all began. This was the first restaurant in London where you could really enjoy seriously good modern British food - light and simple but with deft, complex touches, in what is essentially a very smart, of-the-moment brasserie setting. Kensington Place taught us to expect fabulous space, madly buzzing ambience, top service, and food that made us swoon. And now? With Head chef Daniel Phippard at the helm, a revamped menu is better than ever before, while a refreshed interior remains true to the original chic and relaxed concept. Still number-one choice for media and stage types and the lucky local denizens of Notting Hill, Kensington Place restaurant ramps up the see-and-be-seen factor while appealing to foodies as well.

King William Restaurant
The Old Royal Naval College is a grand campus in the centre of the UNESCO Maritime Greenwich World Heritage site alongside the banks of the Thames. A favourite with location scouts, the College has appeared in films such as Sherlock Holmes, Wolfman and The Duchess, and the picturesque riverside setting is home to the King William – an acclaimed British restaurant popular with architecture buffs and the business lunch set. The old-school dining room at King William, which sits in the undercroft of the baroque painted hall, has been given a modern, elegant makeover and features a neutral colour scheme, vaulted ceilings, wooden floors and simply framed black and white prints giving the King William an air of nonchalant luxury.

Lamberts Restaurant
There is one thing that Balham’s Lamberts Restaurant holds as important above all others - a love of great food. It’s this passion for ingredients, for technique and for flavour that the team here are keen to pass on to you, the guest. Striving to source the best food out there, the kitchen staff at Lamberts seek out small, local suppliers and producers, ensure that they know the provenance of the dishes they serve and are keen supporters of the ethical food movement. There are very few exceptions to the Lamberts rule of using only British, seasonal ingredients and it really does show in every dish, each on full of flavour and unfailingly British in its reserved sophistication. The upscale look of Lamberts is a welcome change from the more usually fashion-forward Balham bars and restaurants, the interior gorgeously classic in its use of the simplest, most tactile furnishings, making for a comfortable, refined feel. Additionally, service is relaxed and unpretentious, the staff friendly and warmly welcoming, not to mention as enthusiastic about the menu and excellent wine list as the chefs. Worth noting is that Lamberts is surprisingly affordable, the menu representing excellent value at both lunch and dinner.

Langtry's
Langtry's restaurant in London's ever-fashionable Sloane Street has a wonderful history. The restaurant is named for Lillie Langtry, once the most celebrated actress in the world and a friend and lover of royalty, who made this magnificent building her home at the end of the 19th century. Langtry's décor retains its historic grandeur and elegance, but has been subtly updated for modern sensibilities and comfort. With molded ceilings, stunning Carrera marble Louis XIV fireplace, oversized mirrors and the original crystal chandelier, Langtry's has an old world romance perfect for business entertaining or dinners for two.
