Umu
Billed as London’s ‘first true Kyoto restaurant’ Umu specialises in kaiseki cuisine which originates from Japan’s ancient capital, Kyoto. One of the most expensive ways in the world to eat, kaiseki is Japanese cooking at its most refined, defined and designed. Those last three adjectives also best describe Umu’s luxurious look. Dark, rich wood is moodily matched with mirrors and low velvet banquettes. Umu means ‘born of nature’ but there’s nothing natural about the prices. Set kaiseki courses, with or without sushi, start at £65 rising to £135 per person. Classic, modern and warm sushi cost £3 to £6 per piece. Highlights include a teriyaki of tuna belly with yuzu served by attractive kimono-clad waitresses.

Watatsumi
An original Japanese restaurant situated just off of Trafalgar Square, Watatsumi is situated within the superb Club Quarters Hotel. Taking diners beyond sushi, Watatsumi is completely unlike any other Japanese dining room in the capital, offering a wide range of unusual dishes from throughout the Land of the Rising Sun. Though full of original features, including ornate ceiling mouldings and marble pillars, the Watatsumi space really captures the simplicity and sleek lines of Japanese design in its juxtaposition of light and dark, use of screens and kanji script as well as subtle hints of quirkiness, particularly in the wonderfully intricate fish design light shades overhead. Balancing contemporary and traditional, the Watatsumi menus comprise both sushi and other cold delicacies from the dedicated sushi bar while the hot kitchen provides classic noodle dishes, tempura and other such delicious delights. The ideal way to experience this excellent restaurant is with the varied Omakase tasting menu and a little time sampling the bar’s tempting cocktail menu.
