The Frontline Club
The Frontline Club restaurant is a welcome haven from the bustling streets of London’s Paddington, and it’s probably a welcome haven from the war zones that many of its regulars report from. The restaurant is part of the Frontline media club that uniquely combines eating, drinking and thinking. Profits from the restaurant support the charitable work of the Frontline Forum with its weekly programme of cutting edge documentaries and discussions that ensure the world’s causes and crises that fade from the headlines are kept in sharp focus. Traditional British cuisine is sourced from specialist, independent producers and the fish is supplied directly from small boats off England’s east coast. The Frontline Club’s menu is unpretentious, uncompromising on quality and priced to be easy on the pocket. Malcolm Gluck himself created the wine list featuring an array of unusual and out-of-the-way bottles at, as Gluck himself says,”afordable, non-rip-off prices”.

The Grazing Goat
Portman Village’s The Grazing Goat restaurant has very good reason for its choice of name. The land here in the Portman Square area was once used as pasture for goats reared, especially for the first Lady Portman because she was allergic to cows and their milk. While the service might not quite stretch to bringing in livestock especially for you here at The Grazing Goat, it’s pretty close with the food so fresh as to suggest it may have just been plucked from the back garden. Typically British, the menu is full of those classic pub staples, ably assisted by a bar full of wondrous ales and wines, made with the seasons very much in mind. This British theme runs through the interior of The Grazing Goat too, balancing rustic ease with contemporary style in a light, comfortable and relaxed dining room and in to the eight gorgeous boutique style hotel rooms above.

The Grill at the Dorchester
toptable Dining Awards 2010 - Runner-up: Celebrity Chef Restaurant. The Grill at the Dorchester restaurant in London’s venerable Dorchester hotel on Park Lane has both an illustrious culinary history and a pretty brilliant current incarnation too. Showcasing classic British ingredients, Hughson’s menu is a combination of classic British dishes like grilled Dover sole and roast beef carved tableside, as well as his own creations, like squab pigeon with herb crust, chicory tart, hedge garlic and spiced lemon. His signature culinary style is assured, clean and elegant. The dining room is a riot of baronial Scottish grandeur with murals of Scottish heroic figures, and the ambience has moved from reserved hush to glad chatter. The Gun
With awards aplenty to its name – including Time Out’s Best Gastropub title – Coldharbour’s The Gun is considered to be among the best pub-restaurants not only on the Docklands but in London. Set in a typical Victorian pub, The Gun has been painstakingly renovated to provide classy, authentic surroundings with a high end finish throughout. It has a classic ‘pub’ look but with a brighter, airier feel than one might expect, complemented by high ceilings, an imposing dark wood bar and, rather wonderfully, a sunny terrace overlooking the water. High quality British food with a particular emphasis on fish, fresh from Billingsgate daily, is The Gun’s speciality while not only does the bar offer a wide range of beers but the wine list is seriously classy too.

The Hemingway
Easily located on the northern edge of East London’s Victoria Park is The Hemingway, a stylish pub with a laid back atmosphere. A typical Victorian city pub from the outside, the interior of The Hemingway is part aristocratic Scottish castle, part Boer hunting lodge, furnished in oxblood Chesterfields and decorated with mounted antlers and taxidermy aplenty – it’s a modern take on the old fashioned, no doubt appealing to the trendiest of East Londoners. Deceptively simple, The Hemingway’s menu offers well-cooked classics with subtle touches of fun and creativity, all fairly priced, while the drinks selection is varied, including a number of very good wines and specialty spirits including, of course, plenty of great rums.
