The Draft House A no nonsense pub and restaurant on the teeming Tower Bridge Road, close to the junction with Tooley Street, The Draft House is precisely what a London drinking hole should be. Created to put beer on the map once and for all, The Draft House treats its brews in much the same way as most restaurants treat wines – paying great attention to storing and pouring, carefully sourcing and being sure of provenance. Good, honest British food is really the only thing which could be considered worthy to stand alongside such a spectacular range of brews so of course on The Draft House’s menu is rustic, seasonal and, wherever possible, locally sourced. The Draft House Since 2009 Northcote Road’s, The Draft House, has been delighting London locals with a fine combination of restaurant quality food and the best beers in the area. Cool and laid back, The Draft House works a distinctly utilitarian vibe with simple painted and exposed woods, impressively large curved bar and white painted walls. The Draft House’s ethos is based around raising beer’s profile, giving it the same attention more often paid to wines, concentrating on provenance, storing and pouring. These international beers, both bottled and on tap with many from artisan breweries, are matched with a stunningly simple, hearty and delicious menu of British food, honest and unpretentious, locally sourced and seasonal. The Drapers Arms This suitably hip pub in Islington has an avuncular demeanor with lashings of retro 50s charm. The elegant restaurant and bar on Barnsbury Street, between Highbury and Islington and Angel stations, is tucked away off the High Street giving it genuine neighbourhood credentials. We love the bright green wooden bar, pale duck egg blue walls, molded ceilings and the black and white diamond ‘tiles’ painted on the floorboards. The Drapers Arms has a gorgeous garden, and the kitchen has earned an acclaimed Michelin Bib Gourmand. The menu includes gems such as the lemon sole with brown shrimps, capers and butter, and the bread and butter pudding with rum and raisin ice cream. The Duke of York Established in 1826, The Duke of York sits at the top of St John’s Wood High Street and still retains much of its original charm. Inside, it’s a warm, welcoming space with a bar and casual dining area – usually full of well-heeled locals – and a more secluded separate dining room that is popular with a post-work crowd looking for great food in a relaxed setting. The comprehensive wine list is regularly updated and offers a good mix of European favourites and new world alternatives. Classic dishes like beer-battered cod with yorkie fries; beef and Guinness sausages with mash potato and onion gravy; and chargrilled rib eye steak feature on the all-day menu. The Sunday Roasts are also highly recommended. Cuisine: British Location: 2 - 2a St Anns Terrace, St Johns Wood, NW8 6PJ [Map] |

The Empress of India Fresh from the successful drawing board of brothers Tom and Ed Martin – creators of superb gastropubs The White Swan, The Well and The Gun - comes the beautiful Empress of India restaurant in London’s Victoria Park. It may be styled a gastropub too, but it feels more like a smart casual restaurant with an exquisite, light dining room decorated with lovely murals and intriguing design details, like mussel shell chandeliers and a bar mirror that once graced the Rex Cinema in Calcutta. The Empress of India serves a fit-for-a-king modern British menu of seasonal, locally-sourced classics, many of them meaty affairs cooked within full view and smelling distance on a chrome rotisserie, next to the open kitchen - the Sunday roasts are set to become legendary. The wine list is affordable and intriguing, and the ‘pub’ element shows itself at The Empress in the list of well-kept draught beers and real ales. The Exhibition Rooms Taking inspiration from The Great Exhibition of 1851 in Crystal Palace, The Exhibition Rooms restaurant is definitely unique for this area of London. Situated over two floors, the restaurant has Colonial-esque elegance on the ground floor restaurant that’s intriguingly juxtaposed with the decadent feel lounge. There’s a lovely decked garden, too. In the dining room, all is light and airy with white walls, masses of windows, wooden floors and vintage seating and tables. The lounge is an anything-can-happen mix of purple suede walls, silvered antique tables and low seating. The Exhibitions Rooms award-winning restaurant is a popular concoction, and the modern British menu has gone down a storm. Try Barbary duck breast with creamed Savoy cabbage, baby beets, caramelised shallots and port jus or skate wing on the bone with sauce grenobloise. Burger fans take note: The Exhibition Rooms makes one of the finest in the area and Monday night is always gourmet burger night. Cuisine: British Location: Westow Hill, London, SE19 1TX [Map] |
