Steam Bar and Restaurant
Situated on East Hill in Wandsworth, Steam is a laid-back bar and restaurant that is always buzzing with a young South London foodie crowd. The thoughtfully compiled wine list is a big hit with the after-work drinkers but the main draw is the enticing and affordable menu. Head Chef William Leigh is passionate about fresh local produce and describes himself as a ‘farmhouse cook’, so there are always plenty of seasonal dishes on offer. We recommend the bavette steak with horseradish cream; the whole lemon sole with black butter and capers; and for dessert, the almond tart. At the weekend, late-starters can stroll in on Sunday for a traditional roast with all the trimmings.

Sun and Doves
Music lovers, art enthusiasts and film buffs alike adore the Sun and Doves pub in Coldharbour Lane - an acoustic music venue and gastro pub that is a hit with a boho Camberwell crowd. Famous for its Sunday roasts, signature Bloody Mary's with Guinness and mix of electronica, breakbeats and nu-jazz – you couldn't find a cosier place to chill with friends and family on a lazy afternoon. The Sun and Doves hosts regular movie and quiz nights, as well as wine appreciation courses, and the kitchen offers a diverse modern British menu with a good range of meat and veggie options. We love the Portobello mushroom burgers with cheddar cheese and spinach, and the steak and Guinness pie with mash.

Sway
Sway restaurant has it all: a terrific dining room that's stylish and comfortable, an excellent modern British menu, five very different and very cool bars, and a nightclub three nights a week. Once you enter, you may never want to leave. Sway is located at the borderline where the City of London meets London's West End, and it's a short distance from Covent Garden, theatres, the Strand and just about everything, it seems. In the midst of all the coolness, you will find the heart of a delightful restaurant beating strongly, with inventive dishes like starter of Thai-spiced coconut chicken skewer with chilli and coriander dip, favourites like main course of lemon chicken breast with chorizo, olives, peppers and sun-blushed tomatoes and guilt-inducing desserts like sticky toffee pudding with fudge sauce and clotted cream. Sway is great for business lunches or after-hours fun or long evenings that start with supper and carry on til you're done.

The Albion
A Georgian gem in London’s vibrant Islington, The Albion is a country style pub restaurant with a little urban gloss. Originally situated in an area of farmland where Londoners would escape from the smoggy city, The Albion is now a part of the sprawl but remains a retreat from the stress of London life, a relaxed space where time stands still before roaring log fires or in pretty walled gardens. Noted for its Sunday lunches, The Albion’s kitchen has been hailed as one of the best by The Guardian, The Observer and The Independent. It’s not hard to see why. Combining British tradition and seasonality, the hearty yet delicate dishes really are the beating heart of this wonderful pub.

The Alma
There are few pubs in London which have retained their authenticity like The Alma. An imposing Victorian building complete with tiled exterior and turret-like dome, this Wandsworth local is a bit of an institution to say the least. Inside, original features aplenty remain, from mosaics to mirrors, scattered around the large central bar where punters gather for the good range of bottled and tap beers. The atmosphere is lively throughout the week with a rare mix of locals enjoying the friendly welcome while on certain afternoons you’ll find the place heaving with happy sports fans – The Alma is considered THE place for rugby. Award winning food is the jewel in the Alma crown with fresh, seasonal ingredients going in to the deliciously creative, stylish British dishes served in the light, airy dining room.

The Avalon
Situated just minutes from Clapham Common, The Avalon is owned by the team behind other popular locals like The Bolingbroke and The Abbeville. A complete refurbishment has left the place looking seriously stylish; with banquette seating, impressive light-fittings and a walnut bar adding to the relaxed yet decadent atmosphere. The menu is a cut above standard gastropub fare and Head Chef Adam Hicks uses only the finest ingredients in the hearty British dishes. Our favourites include the Wright's Brother's oysters; the traditional roasts with all the trimmings, the steaks, and the apple and blackberry crumble with cinnamon ice cream. In the summer, diners can sit outside in the garden or on the sunny terraces. With the bar offering a great range of regional ales, fine wines and cocktails; The Avalon has it all!

The Bald Faced Stag
Situated on the East Finchley High Road, The Bald Faced Stag has long been a local legend. A major refurbishment in 2007 brought this wonderful old pub in to the 21st century, giving it a new lease of life and bringing with it a new crowd of trendy young locals who have made this gastropub a real success. The imposing Victorian building now houses a welcoming, nouveau-antique look, complete with shabby chic furnishings and touches of boudoir-ish decadence. A huge beer garden underneath the shade of an old sycamore is the piece-de-resistance whilst an open kitchen brings a touch of gastronomic excitement to the dining room. On menu you’ll find a range of fabulous dishes combining the best of British with a little European spice and sunshine.
