Rowley's St James' Not many restaurants have a loyalty scheme, which just goes to show how very loyal Rowley's long-time regulars happen to be. The room is traditionally British, but also informal and relaxed. The menu changes monthly, and always features Rowley's tremendously good char-grilled entrecote steak or breast of Sussex chicken with herb and butter sauce and endless chips. The trad Caeser salad is also terrific. Short, intelligent wine list and the sun-dried tomato chutney served with the cheese is just right. Great for business lunches, or pre- or post-theatre. Ruby Grand The Ruby Grand’s lounge, conservatory and walled garden make it the ideal restaurant for a sunny afternoon’s dining. Yet if the weather’s not playing fair, there’s as much delight to be taken in the menu as there is in the surroundings. The Ruby Grand offers simplistic, classic and always fresh British food with Mediterranean influences, the home smoked salmon with their renowned baby beetroots and horseradish typifying their perfectly simple approach. Freshness is paramount and always on display – peek into restaurant’s open kitchen and you’ll see the chefs hand crafting ciabbatas, foccacias and specially selecting the mince themselves for their burgers. Searcy's Bar and Restaurant Searcy’s, a relaxed lounge and restaurant located in the Barbican arts complex in east London, is ideal for relaxed cocktails and post-show suppers. The contemporary dining room commands sensational views overlooking the Barbican lakeside and city skyline, and is filled with theatre-mad dilettantes, librarians and ladies who lunch, creating a buzzy pre and post-show ambience. The modern British menu features favourites such as the Welsh rump of lamb with spring onion mash, homemade fishcakes and a delicious selection of traditional puddings. Searcy’s restaurant is perfect for tragically theatrical post-analyses of plays, or if you just want to get a bit squiffy with mates before the show. Seasons Dining Room More so than perhaps any other part of London, Hammersmith has developed a real family neighbourhood vibe. Every family friendly neighbourhood needs a good, friendly and unpretentious local restaurant, and Seasons is just that. From the bright yellow exterior to the contemporary bistro-ish interior Seasons is warm and welcoming, while pavement dining gives summer time diners an added boost and art works on the wall provide a talking point as well as pleasant surroundings. Perhaps unsurprisingly the menu is totally seasonal, using organic meat supplied by the family master butcher and produce from Britain and Western Europe. Expect dishes such as herb crusted spring lamb or steaks from the grill served with hand cut chips. Cuisine: British Location: 323 King Street, Hammersmith, London, W6 9NH [Map] |

Shepherd's Situated on Marsham Street in the heart of Westminster, Shepherd’s Restaurant is an ideal venue for business lunches and discreet dinners a deux. The low ceilings, partitions and pillars create an intimate but informal atmosphere that remains popular with the political fraternity from the nearby Houses of Parliament and local government offices. The Anglo-French menu offers a two or three course prix fixe, which offers excellent value for money. Popular dishes include confit of duck with carrot mash; maize-fed chicken breast with asparagus and a leek and cream sauce; and crème brulee with roasted rhubarb. The wine list caters for all tastes and budgets and includes popular French wines interspersed with a selection of superior quality and New World wines. Simpsons Tavern Simpsons Tavern is one of three inns located amongst the charming alleyways at the centre of the City financial district, near the enchanting Tower Bridge. Built way back in 1757, the tavern retains much of its olde worlde charm, especially in its thoroughly British menu featuring potted shrimps in butter to start, followed by oxtail stew, steak and kidney pie and, most vital of all, some good old-school spotted dick and custard. Naturally, it is almost always filled with City workers during the week fuelling their stomachs and mind for another round of money-making. Sonny's Barnes' favourite restaurant to be seen in, is white walled, airy and elegant with a constantly changing collection of modern art. Owned by Rebecca Mascarenhas and James Harris it is invariably full of affluent locals together with the odd thespian or two. Always buzzy in the evenings, Sunday lunch is also popular with the Barnes brigade who bring in their awfully polite offspring before perambulating round the pond. What's cooking? Red cabbage, glazed shallots, port jus. Daubeouf beef, grilled tongue, button onions, salsify and pearl barley. Rhubarb and almond tart. Southwark Rooms Nestled in the bustling surrounds of the Thames, Borough Market and London Bridge stands the stylish yet laid back haven of The Southwark Rooms. Starting its life as an old local pub in 2003, The Southwark Rooms Soho-style facelift transformed the bar and restaurant into a trendy destination. Regulars love soaking up the friendly vibe, and the internationally-inspired menu is perfect for soaking up the lush cocktails. A parade of light bites such as salt and pepper squid or meze plate satisfies as starters or just a nibble for the peckish, whereas hearty sandwiches and mains make an excellent meal. We love the twice-cooked pork belly with pear salad, as well as the homemade Southwark Rooms burger. Cuisine: British Location: 60 Southwark Street, London, SE1 1UN [Map] |
