Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID) is an independent charity that exists to challenge immigration detention in the UK through the provision of legal advice, information and representation to people held in immigration detention alongside research, policy advocacy and strategic litigation aimed at improving detention policy and practice. Our vision is of a world in which there is no immigration detention and in which people subject to immigration control are not deprived of their liberty for administrative convenience.
Our telephone helpline for detainees is open every Monday to Thursday morning on 0207 456 9750 and we visit detention centres and prisons twice a week to run legal advice sessions. We cannot represent everyone who approaches us for assistance so we help people make their own applications for release. We are able to take on a few cases for representation every month including clients with mental or physical ill-health, survivors of torture and parents separated from their children.
Our research and evidence from our casework help us achieve changes in detention policy and practice, and we refer cases to lawyers for unlawful detention challenges against the Home Office.
We organise events throughout the year, raising funds for our vital work.
